İstanbul Research Institute

Istanbul Research Institute is the second significant step in the extensive culture-art project that Suna & İnan Kıraç Foundation started with Pera Museum, which was opened in 2005, in the fields of culture, arts, education and healthcare since 2003.

Istanbul, the capital of empires, which left its marks on Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman civilizations, is the best starting point for the discovery of both its identity as a "mega city" that was shaped in thousands of years, and also the diverse cultural geographies that surround it. Therefore, Istanbul Research Institute has identified it as its main goals to research the city's history, cultural structure and the human profile covering the Byzantine, Ottoman and the Republican periods by following the traces of civilization from the center towards the periphery; for this purpose, to develop and support projects, to organize national and international conferences and event and to share the results with relevant institutions and to reach the public through the media. The institute aims to meet these main goals in line with the working programs of the Byzantine, Ottoman and the Republican Studies sections that it holds.

Istanbul Research Institute serves in a historical building constructed in Tepebaşı at the end of 19th century by the architect Guglielmo Semprini. The institute is a research institution that meticulously maintains the contemporary scientific criteria, aiming to represent Istanbul at the international level through its “Galleria”, “Atatürk and the Republican Studies”, “Ottoman Studies” and “Byzantine Studies” sections, designed for the exhibitions that will support the projects that it produces, as well as through an Information-Documentation Center and its library that is open to any type of reader.
